B2W Software improvement on B2W Track and B2W Maintain
B2W Track is a field tracking application that captures employee and equipment hours, materials delivered and used, production quantities etc. With this product, job superintendents can analyze data to ensure their work is completed on time and under budget.
B2W Maintain is for tracking and scheduling equipment maintenance. With this product, a company can increase equipment utilization and lower repair costs.
Project Date
2015-2016
My Role
I worked as the only User Experience Designer on this project alongside a Product Manager and a development team composed of 3 Developers and 1 QA team member. I was responsible for customer research, wireframes, and defining the styling for implementation.
The Problem
Mechanics and other employees needed an easy way to login when they shared a device with others in their shop.
Project Summary
When the tablet app was built, it worked with B2W Track and had a simple login. A year later, we added equipment maintenance functionality and talked to a number of customers. In that process we learned that many equipment maintenance shops would be setting up one tablet device like a kiosk. This meant that a few users were sharing the same device. For other users, like foreman on job sites, only one user was logging into the device. We wanted login to be smooth and quick for everyone. For this reason, we revisited the login functionality with the shop users in mind.
The Challenge
- Make login easy for companies with a large number of employees
- An employee needs to select their name from a list of employees in the database
- Allow for multiple people to share the same device
- Since multiple people share a device, logging in and out will be a common action.
The Solution
The user signs in with the button on the top right of the screen. This will be the center for logging in and out.

Clicking on the “Sign In” button opens a menu to log in. The name of the last logged in user is prefilled. For devices that are not shared, the user can login from here.

By clicking on the name, you can select a different user. The five most recent users are at the top of the list. You can scroll through the list to log in as any other person.

A search box is also available to find someone in the list.

Once a user is selected, they can enter their pin and log in.
The logged in user is always available on the menu. This is so a person sharing a device can be sure they are the one logged in.

Benefits
One this feature was released, we included the login functionality in the next set of user tests. We didn’t see any issues with this area. Since this time, we have monitored customer requests to identify improvements in this area. We have not received feedback in this area so we have focused further improvements on other areas of the product.
